A fine example of the traditional "Ming" style folding
chair, popular in two and three seat configurations for out door
events and picnics.
|

The modified silhouette of a classic Ming style Southern Official's
Hat armchair doubled here for a specific purpose of portability. The
plain splats attached to a straight crestrail of round section changing
to square section as it meets the hinge point at the seat forming
an X. As crestrail becomes legs, returning to round section and ending
at a triangular section footrail/base along the width of the two seats.
The rope seat reinformced with iron chains and pins.
Such seats were traditionally for outdoor use only, some say to watch
opera performances out of doors where the wealthier families would
bring their own seating rather than stand or take to the ground. Extensive
use is evident in this example as are some fine details such as the
small hole into which the chain peg disappears when folded (right
side). |
