One of the finest examples we have found this elegant dowry cabinets
with very fine paintings on the raised panels depicting various
classical stories. With original finish and hardware it offers a
stunning, practical accent to any interior.
|

The cabinet with four upper and 4 lower doors with 4 drawers in
between. The lower set with designs of birds coupled with seasonal
flowers˜lark and prunus, Fowl and peonies, ducks and lotus, pheasant
with camellia, all symbolizing happiness and constancy in love. The
drawers with low relief carved images of couples in rochery gardens.
The upper doors with images of couples in various seasonal activities
(left to right) visiting at New Years˜winter, harvest˜fall, fishing
summer, tilling spring. Wishes are inscribed above (left to right)
longevity and fortune, many sons and generations, offspring as numerous
as the budding flowers, wishes of 5 happinesses. The lockplates of
the central doors also with inscribed wishes for a home in the capital
, living in the Southern Country , that is wishes to succeed in government
office and retire well in the South.
Such a cabinet with auspicious symbols throughout would have been
part of the dowry of a wealthy peasant family, possibly even a land
holding family with hopes to leave the working class behind and raise
sons to become scholar officials. |
