Offering
Canada's finest and largest selection of Chinese Regional Antiques
since 1998
Hidden Dragon Antiques
was founded by John Milne, his wife Jharna, and twin brother Jim.
John and Jim, both interior designers, had developed a passion for
antiques in the 1960s when living in Montreal and traveling the
province searching for French Canadian Antiques to resell to the
Ontario market while building up their own personal collections.
In March 1998, they traveled
to China on their first buying trip, discovering a vast and varied
treasure trove of Regional antiques, some dating over 500 years.
They assembled a large collection of distinctive pieces with the
emphasis on quality, condition and original finish that filled one
20 and four 40' containers. Unlike the very expensive Classic
hardwood furniture found in museums or the overly ornate Export
Chinese antiques designed for the Western market, the reasonably
priced and diverse Regional antique furnishings reflected the history
of the 63 different Nationalities that make up the Peoples Republic
of China.
Aware of the importance
of retaining as much of their original finish and condition as possible,
they guided their dealers to make sure that their 'as found' antiques
were not over-restored, ensuring that their value would not be lost.
Check out their pages Memories of China, Antiques in the Rough and
Stacked and Packed to share in their journey of discovery.
With the expansion of
their business into 36 Antiques Centers in Ontario and the North-Eastern
part of the USA, their knowledge and buying power increased and
with it greater time spend sourcing out the finest antique dealers
in Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and other antique centers. On many
buying trips they traveled with their dealers into the rural areas
to get the "first pick' of some of finest Regional antiques
available.
Hidden Dragon Antiques
commitment to offering exceptionally fine, original Regional Chinese
Antiques at reasonable prices, and their many articles written to
help shed light on these newly 'discovered' Chinese Regional Antiques,
has resulted in a well-deserved reputation. Some of their treasures
have found their way into Museums and have been shipped to Bermuda,
Barbados, England, India and back to China.
As their 10th year anniversary
approaches, they are now focusing on the better quality Ming and
Qing regional furniture and collectables as featured in their Signature
and Gallery Collections, plus some interesting generic items. All
with an emphasis on Uniqueness, Originality and Great Value!
Their Mantra "Quality
not Quantity" and "Less is More" is now their focus
as they are coming full circle with their Toronto showroom and warehouse
being their only location with many of their better items being
showcased on their Web-Site.
